Cybersecurity Tip: What to Do If You Lose Your Laptop (or Other Device)It happens in a split second — you’re driving home from the coffee shop when you suddenly realize your laptop isn’t with you. You rush back, retracing your steps with a sinking feeling, only to confirm the worst: it’s gone. Now what?

The answer depends on the precautions you’ve taken before the loss. If your data is properly encrypted, your device requires a password to access, and you’ve logged out of key applications, you have a bit more breathing room. But regardless of your setup, your first step should always be the same:

1. Notify your IT provider immediately

Contact your IT department (that’s us!) to report the missing device. From there, we can:

  • Change passwords and lock access to accounts
  • Disable or block access to company applications and data
  • Remotely wipe the device if necessary
This step is crucial, especially if the device was logged in or lacked encryption.

2. Change ALL your passwords

Start with your most sensitive accounts — banking, company systems, financial tools, and anything involving confidential data. If your laptop stored medical records, Social Security numbers, financial records, or other regulated data, you may also need to consult a qualified attorney to understand notification requirements under state or federal law.

3. Strengthen your safeguards moving forward

Prevention is always easier (and cheaper) than crisis response. Make sure you have:

  • Device encryption enabled
  • Remote monitoring and management installed
  • Daily backups running
  • A PIN or password lock activated after 10 minutes of inactivity
  • A habit of logging out of websites and apps

Losing a device is stressful — but having the right protections in place can prevent it from becoming a full-blown data breach.
