E-mail account takeover represents 38% of all online fraud — and the worst part is that many people don’t realize it’s happening until real damage is done.
So how do you know if your account has been compromised? Here are five telltale signs to watch for:
- Weird e-mails: You start getting odd replies from people you know (or don’t know) that don’t match any message you sent. Or you find unfamiliar messages in your Sent or Deleted folders.
- New signature: A strange signature suddenly appears on your messages, or your phone number is swapped out in your existing signature.
- Profile changes: Your e-mail profile has been altered — maybe a new authentication method or updated phone number shows up that you didn’t add.
- Auto-forwarding rules: Messages with keywords like “invoice” are automatically being forwarded to an external e-mail or sent to the trash. Attackers often use this to intercept, edit, and resend messages.
- Password changes: You notice multiple password reset requests for your social media, cloud apps, or other online services. Hackers are likely trying to spread their access to your accounts.
🚨 If you see any of these signs, act immediately. Change your passwords, review your security settings, and call us if you need urgent help.
