One of the most dangerous cybersecurity beliefs among small businesses is the idea that they are “too small” to be hacked. Unfortunately, this assumption is not only wrong — it can be financially devastating.
Earlier this year, our security team helped a two-person law firm that fell victim to a ransomware attack. They believed their size protected them from being targeted. But hackers infiltrated their systems, destroyed all their backups, and deployed ransomware across their network.
The ransom demand? $44,000.
Why that amount? Because that was exactly how much the firm had in its bank account.
This is a critical point many business owners don’t realize: Hackers do reconnaissance before striking.
Once inside your system, they rarely deploy ransomware immediately. Instead, they:
- Explore your network
- Access your files
- Watch your behavior
- Look at your bank accounts or QuickBooks data
- Identify how much you can realistically pay
Then they set a ransom amount based on what they know you have.
If the attackers had demanded $250,000, the firm would have been forced to shut down. But by demanding $44,000, the exact amount the firm had available, the hackers created a painful decision — pay or lose everything.
What Can You Do to Prevent This?
You need an advanced security solution that can detect suspicious behavior long before ransomware is deployed. Tools that monitor unusual activity, alert you to intrusions, and identify attackers already inside your environment can stop cybercriminals before they destroy your systems — or your business.
Small does not mean safe. In fact, small businesses are often the easiest and most profitable targets for hackers.
